What is “network-level” anti-virus?
Network-level means that the anti-virus protection is located on the server that you connect to when getting online. Viruses that attempt to pass through this connection will be blocked at the “network-level”, BEFORE they reach your computer.
How does it work?
When you access a web site or receive an e-mail that has a virus attached, our servers will scan that traffic or message. It is done VERY quickly – you will see no change to the speed of your Internet connection. When the virus is detected, it is blocked from being sent to your computer (you won’t have the option of “accidentally” installing a virus). A message is presented to your screen telling you that the virus was detected and blocked.
How does it differ from an anti-virus software package like Norton or McAfee?
Network-level anti-virus will protect your connection to the Internet in a more complete and secure level than an anti-virus software package. If a virus comes through your connection and your software is not updated, it may still infect your PC. Network-level anti-virus is always updated and protecting BEFORE a virus can even reach your PC.
Do I still need virus scan software on my computer?
Yes! But we suggest that you don’t spend money on one. AVG has a free version that will scan your computer on a regular basis. You don’t need to worry about viruses being downloaded, just those that might infect your PC via a disc, CD or memory stick. Visit our support page for more details on how to download and install the program.
What elements does network-level anti-virus protect?
Our security package will protect traffic to and from your PC on SMTP, POP3, IMAP, FTP and HTTP/HTTPS. This covers all elements of e-mail (message and attachments), file downloads and standard Internet traffic.
If I become infected, will this package stop me from infecting others?
Sometimes we do pick up viruses and then unknowingly send them via e-mail to others. This package will stop you from sending a virus infection via your Internet connection. It will not stop the spread of a virus on a shared CD or memory stick.
Will it affect the system performance of my PC?
No! You should see no negative impact on your PC performance.
